Rare books collections: Golf Collection

Golf Collection

Initially developed by the Library from existing stock, the Golf Collection has been subsequently and considerably expanded through additional donations and purchases. St Andrews has long been known as the “birthplace of modern golf” and so it's only fitting that the University of St Andrews should hold a Golf Collection.

The Golf Collection currently contains approximately 800 volumes, including but not limited to histories of the game, biographies of golfers, tournament programs, club histories, literary compilations, books about golf memorabilia and collecting, and even children’s picture books.  The majority of this collection dates from the 20th and 21stcenturies, with a handful of 19th century publications.

Highlights include a first edition (1875) of Golf: a Royal & Ancient Game, one of the most comprehensive and attractively presented compilations of golfing literature, and The book of St Andrews Links, containing the earliest printed plans of the St Andrews Links.

Classmarks for books in this collection have the prefix Golf and all books from this collection which are currently on the online catalogue can be found here.
Special Collections also holds extensive archival and photographic material related to the game of golf.
