Online reading lists - info for staff

Guidance for teaching staff on creating and editing online lists for their modules

Create a bookmark for a book

There are a couple of methods for adding items to your list:

1. Quick method: adding books directly from the reading list page – NB: this comes with a slight health warning.

2. Recommended method: finding books via the Library catalogue, then adding them to your list – this is a surer method.

1. Quick Method

On the reading list page click the Add resource button.

In the window that opens enter your search terms. These can be keywords, an exact book title, an author name, an ISBN.

You’ll be presented with a list of 5 suggestions:

Clicking on book titles or cover images will let you see options for each item (e.g. the first title above):

This will add the book directly to your list:

The Image of Edit menu button menu button (on the right hand side of the page) will allow you to add a Note for students (e.g. 'Read chapter 1'):

(Another option via this menu is to add a Note for library, e.g. 'Please order 2 additional copies' [N.B. if you do this, request a review via the Edit button at the top of the page to alert the library that you've added a request].

If you wish, you can set an importance level:

The quick method can be a bit hit or miss. The search will bring up a lot of items not in stock in the library, or may display older editions when the library has the current edition, or may not display where we have e-book versions, etc.

If you’re in a hurry this quick method will let you build a workable list, but if you’re able to spend a little more time the recommended method below will allow you to create a more comprehensive list.

**Important**
Any items you add won’t be visible to students until you publish your list.

Step 1: Open a separate tab on your browser. From there:

– go to the Library homepage or the Classic Catalogue and search for a book

– on the search results page, click on the title you want to add to your list to open the full record (as in the examples below).

[Note: If you want to create a bookmark for an individual chapter/essay rather than a whole book see the instructions for this on the Chapters page.]

Next step: Return to the browser tab for your reading list and add in your new bookmarks:
