Online reading lists - info for staff

Guidance for teaching staff on creating and editing online lists for their modules

Important first step

The first time you use the reading lists software you will need to add a button to your browser's header / toolbar that will allow you to add books, articles and online material to your list.

This involves downloading an extension for your browser and configuring it to recognise you as a University of St Andrews user.

Add a bookmark extension button to your browser's header

Working through the following steps will add a extension button to the top right of your browser page:

Adding to Chrome

1. Follow this link to open the extension page in the Chrome store

2. Click on ..Add to Chrome..

3. Select Add extension

This will add a button at the top right of the page.

  • Tip: Click on  to pin in header.

You’ll now need to configure the extension to recognise you as a University of St Andrews user:

4. Right-click on the button

5. In the Institution: ‘Choose one’ box select University of St. Andrews

You're now ready to go.

Adding to Edge

1. Follow this link to open the extension page in the Chrome store

2. Click on ..Add to Chrome..


[Don't see an Add to Chrome button? > Click on the ... menu button (top right) > choose Extensions > then on Manage extensions > select Allow extensions from other stores]

3. Select Add extension

4. Click on the button at the top right, then on Extensions

5. Pin the extension button in the Edge toolbar:

You’ll now need to configure the extension to recognise you as a University of St Andrews user:

6. Click on the button,
    then in the Institution: ‘Choose one’ box select University of St. Andrews [Save]

Adding to Firefox

1. Follow this link to the Firefox Add-ons menu 

2. Search for Talis Aspire:

3. Click on ..Add to Firefox..

4. Click on Add

This will add a button at the top right of the page.

  • Tip: Click on  to pin in header.

You’ll now need to configure the extension to recognise you as a University of St Andrews user:

5. In the Institution: ‘Choose one’ box select University of St. Andrews

You're now ready to go.

Adding to Safari

1. Visit the app store from your Mac or other Apple device

2. Search for Talis Aspire

3. Click on Install and then Open

4. This will take you to the extensions area of Safari where you can enable the extension

5. Right-click on the Talis icon that has now appeared in your bookmarks bar and choose Manage Extension

6. On the preferences tab, select University of St. Andrews from the drop-down list of institutions and click Save.

OR

Follow steps 1-4 then,

5. Click on the Talis icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen

6. If prompted choose to turn it on in Safari extension preferences

7. Then select Talis Aspire from the list of extensions and click on the Preferences button

8. Select University of St. Andrews from the drop down list of institutions and click Save


You're now ready to go.

 


[Note for existing users: If you've installed anAdd to My Bookmarks buttonbutton on your browser's toolbar this will continue to work, however for secuity reasons Talis (the reading lists software provider) strongly recommend installing the extension as outlined below. Once installed, the extension button works in exactly the same way as the Add to My Bookmarks button.]
