Online Postgraduate Students: Referencing

Referencing guide

Referencing software

Reference management software helps you to keep track of resources. It allows you to generate and format a bibliography in the required style. Find out more on our guide.

  • EndNote is software which is available for you to download to your own device while you are a registered student at the University of St Andrews. It allows syncing between devices, and comes with tech support. Find and sign up for our online EndNote training sessions on Personal Development Management System (PDMS).
  • Mendeley Reference Manager is free to download from the web and works okay if you use a lot of pdf journal articles. Note that Mendeley doesn't work with referencing styles that use footnotes, and doesn't work with Google Docs.
  • Zotero is another open-source option which works with Google Docs but has limited storage (300 MB, or about 100 articles). This is more than enough space for most PGT dissertations.  Note Zotero doesn't work with Internet Explorer. If you have questions about Zotero, get in touch.

What to know about referencing

  • You will need to reference all resources you use for academic work
  • Your course of study determines which style you should use (check your handbook or ask your module coordinator)
  • Check out our referencing styles guide to get started!

Referencing is how you acknowledge and give credit resources you're using in your academic work. It helps the reader see how you are interacting with others' ideas while developing your own written thoughts and arguments. Academic referencing comes in many different styles, so our referencing styles guide gives examples of how to reference main resources in styles used at St Andrews. You can also take a look at the searchable e-book below for help.
