eBook Formats in the Online Reader:
What eBook formats are available?
When using the online reader, De Gruyter eBooks are only available in a PDF format. When downloading a book, certain titles are also available in an EPUB format.
Where to find the available formats on the landing page?
In the online reader, content can only be accessed as a PDF. Content can be accessed by clicking the 'View content' button located on the right hand side of the book's cover, and then clicking on a chapter title. It is not possible to open the entire eBook at once within the online reader. When a PDF of a chapter is open, a list entitled, 'Chapters in this Book' will be present on the right hand side of the page. This list can be used to access other sections of the book without returning to the landing page.
Changing Font Size/Zoom:
Font Size:
Currently, there is no option to change font size on the De Gruyter website. In cases where font size can be changed in the browser's settings, the changes will be displayed on certain parts of the De Gruyter website. The changes do not effect the eBook landing page, or the online reader. The changes tend to work better on the home page and other general information pages.
Zoom:
Currently, there is no built in zoom option on the De Gruyter website. In cases where the zoom size can be changed in the browser's settings, the changes will be displayed broadly on the De Gruyter website. The changes will be reflected on the online reader up to 300% zoom. When using the downloaded PDF or EPUB formats, pages can be zoomed in up to 500% using the built in zoom in and zoom out buttons.
Changing background/text colour:
Currently, there is no built-in option to change the colour of the background or text within the De Gruyter website. In cases where background colour can be changed in the browser's settings, the changes will be displayed in most areas of the De Gruyter website. The background colour of the online reader will always remain white, although the text will be highlighted with the colour scheme selected.
Keyboard Navigation:
The De Gruyter website can be navigated using a keyboard through using the tab key to move between links, and the enter button to follow a link.
The website features a 'Skip to Content' button which appears in the upper left corner of the screen when first pressing the tab key on any page. Pressing the enter key when this button is highlighted will skip the website's headers and move directly to the book's content.
The website also features a 'Skip Section' button on drop down menus which allows for the rest of that menu to be passed over. The 'Skip Section' button only appears when selected, and can be accessed by pressing the Tab key once when any drop down heading is selected.
Using the Table of Contents:
How do I access the table of contents from the landing page?
When following a link to a De Gruyter eBook from the library catalogue, you are first brought to that book's 'Overview' page. To access the table of contents, click the 'View content' button which is located on the left of the screen, below the front cover of the book.

Clicking on this button will display a list of all the chapters in the book. From here, clicking on a chapter title will open that chapter in the online reader, whilst clicking on the 'Download PDF' button located next to each chapter title will download that specific chapter as a PDF.
As there is no option to open the entire eBook within the online reader, the reader itself has no built in table of contents. However, when a chapter is open in the online reader, a table of contents is displayed on the right hand side of the screen. This table can be used for quick access to other chapters without returning to the landing page.

Save and Print options for De Gruyter eBooks
What download options are available?
All content provided by De Gruyter is DRM-free, meaning users can download, print, and copy as much as they like.
De Gruyter hosts eBooks published by the De Gruyter Group, as well as eBooks from a large range of 'partner publishers'. Depending on whether or not a book was published by the De Gruyter Group or a partner publisher, the download options will vary.
De Gruyter Group
The De Gruyter Group consists of De Gruyter themselves, as well eight imprint publishers whose details can be found on the De Gruyter website. eBooks published by the De Gruyter Group will be available to download in their entirety, either as a PDF or an EPUB. All De Gruyter Group eBooks are available to download as PDFs, but only some are also available as EPUBs. In general, books published within the last ten years are more likely to offer an EPUB version, but this does vary from title to title.
Partner Publishers
All other books hosted on the De Gruyter website are published by their partner publishers. A list of these publishers can be found on the De Gruyter website. eBooks published by a partner publisher can never be downloaded as an entire eBook. Instead, individual chapters can be downloaded as PDFs. These eBooks are still DRM-free, so users are able to download as much of the book as they like.
How to download chapters
Individual chapters can be downloaded as PDFs by accessing the table of contents. To access the table of contents, click the 'View content' button which is located on the left of the screen, below the front cover of the book.

In cases where there is no 'View content' button, the table of contents can be found at the bottom of the lading page. From the table of contents, clicking on the 'Download PDF' button located next to each chapter title will download that specific chapter as a PDF.
How to download an entire eBook
When the option is available, entire eBooks can be downloaded by clicking on the 'Download eBook' button located in the top right of the the landing page. There will be different buttons present depending on the formats available to download for each book.

Using screen readers and text-to-speech software with De Gruyter eBooks
Screen Reader Compatibility with De Gruyter eBooks:
Note: Whilst this section will give an overview for which screen readers work with the above platform, there are many variables which can impact screen reader performance:
- Browser - Different browsers may not function identically with certain screen readers like Read Aloud only being available with specific browsers. In general, this guide tested books using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Safari.
- Software - When using downloaded content, the software chosen to open documents such as PDFs and EPUBS can impact on the functionality of screen readers. In general, this guide tested books using Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge's built in reader's for PDFs, and Calibre and Apple Books for EPUBS.
- Document preparation: As eBook providers host titles from a variety of publishers, there can be significant differences in screen reader compatibility from title to title. For example, older PDFs are less likely to have OCR text, meaning it cannot always been highlighted or read by a screen reader. In general, this guide tested multiple eBooks for each provider.
