Referencing Software: Adding books from the University library

Adding print and e-books to your EndNote Library from Library Search

  • Find the item you want to add in library search
  • To the right of each result you will see 3 action buttons.

Three icons are show.  The first is a blue rectangle in portrait orientation with a white arrow inside pointing from the bottom left to the top right' the second is an envelope icon, and the third is a pin icon.

  • Choose the first button (a dark rectangle with a white arrow pointing up from the bottom left to the top right of the rectangle)

  • An expanded range of export options will display

The image includes the details of the book.  Beneath the book details there are seven export icons: Icon one is an excel icon with Export to Excel text beneath it, the second export is a QR code icon with the text QR beneath it, the third is a double quotation mark icon with the text citation beneath it. the four is a chain icon with the text permalink beneath it, the fifth is a dark rectangle with a white arrow pointing from the bottom left to the top right of the rectangle with the text Export to BibTeX beneath it; the sixth is a a dark rectangle with a white arrow pointing from the bottom left to the top right of the rectangle with the text Export RIS beneath it, and the seventh is an envelope icon. A large box displays beneath all of these options with the text encoding within it, beneath this is the option to Download.

  • Choose Export RIS and click Download.
  • The file will download, select it to open the reference in Endnote.

You may have to edit fields for books which you have imported into you endnote Library.  E.g. the title field may also include the author or editor.

University of St Andrews Library Connection Filter

To add this connection file to EndNote on your own device:

  • Double click the icon above
  • It will open in EndNote
  • In Endnote choose File > Save as
  • Close the filter
  • To use the connection file look in the left hand menu of EndNote screen. Under Online Search you should see an option for U St Andrews Library. Choose this to search the library collections and to move records into your EndNote library.
  • If the connection file doesn't show under Online Search then click on the + to the right of Online search and choose it from the list of files
