Data Literacy for Social and Environmental Justice: Managing your references

Referencing guide

As part of your academic work you will be expected to reference any resources you use. Many different styles of referencing are used at the University of St Andrews and it will depend on your course of study which style you are required to use. Check any guidelines in your programme/module booklet or ask your module co-ordinator.

If you are new to referencing or to the style you have been asked to use then use our referencing styles guide to see how to reference main resources for each of the styles.

Referencing software

There are many different types of referencing  tools available. These allow you to keep track of all the articles, books and reports you use. It also allows you to generate a bibliography and format it in the required style. At the University of St Andrews we support 2 main software packages:

  • EndNote is software which is available for you to download to your own device while you are a registered student at the University of St Andrews. We provide online training sessions on how to use EndNote effectively. Sign up via Personal Development Management System (PDMS).
  • Mendeley Reference Manager is free to download from the web and works best if you use a lot of pdf journal articles. Note that Mendeley does not currently work with referencing styles that use footnotes. We provide online training sessions on how to use Mendeley effectively. Sign up via Personal Development Management System (PDMS).
