A guide to getting started with the Library

About the Main Library

The Main Library is the largest of the University libraries:

  • See the Library Spaces webpage for Main Library opening times
  • Silent study spaces and general study spaces.
  • Collections for all subjects.
  • Computers and printers.
  • Bookable group study rooms.
  • Service Desk and Welcome Desk.
  • Academic Liaison Librarians (one-to-one support).
  • You need to bring your card to access the Main Library.

Main Library Facilities

You'll need your matriculation card to enter and exit the Main Library, it also serves as your borrowing card.

Use the Self-Service borrow and return machines.

Use the kiosk on the left to borrow, check your account of renew items.  To borrow:

  • select Borrow on the touchscreen,
  • place your card, barcode up onto the machine,
  • place the item(s) you want to borrow onto the machine,
  • check the screen to ensure everything you want to borrow is listed then select Done on the touchscreen,
  • you'll receive an email with the details of the items you've borrowed and when they are due for return

Use the machine on the right to return items:

  • place the item you want to return onto the machine one at a time,
  • the conveyor belt will take the book,
  • see the small screen on the right to see what you've returned,
  • if you want a print receipt select from the receipt options.

 

The Short loans area is next to the Library Service Desk on level 2

  • You can borrow up to 4 items from short loan at a time;
  • you can borrow for four hours;
  • after 5pm items are due back by 10.30am the next day;
  • fines are charged for late return of overdue items, at 50p per hour;
  • Short loans cannot be renewed online.

Books and journals are located throughout the Library:

  • Short loan can be found on level 2;
  • you can borrow Short loan materials for 4 hours, or overnight;
  • books with classmarks A-P can be found on level 3;
  • books with classmarks Q-Z can be found on level 4;
  • print journals can be found on level 4.
  • We have a wide range of ebooks and online journals

Search the Library collections to find all the books and journals available to you.

There are multi-function print, scan and copy machines on every floor in the Main Library.

Use your matriculation card to access your print queue or make copies.

There are computers on every floor in the Main Library, and power sockets on every desk if you bring your own device.

Levels 3 and 4 are Silent study spaces

Level 2 is a general study space.  Here you can talk, take phone calls, and have cold food.

The Collaboration Space is downstairs on level 1.  It's a social space, with microwaves and hot and cold drinking water.

Lockers are available to rent for the academic year.

Main Library
Can be rented from Monday 9th September 2019 to Monday 31st August 2020
