The photographs of landscape photographer Robert Moyes Adam represent a visual survey of the Scottish landscape from the years 1901-1956. His 14,495 plate glass negatives which form the main body of the collection display a consistent documentary and topographic approach recording rural, highland and island Scotland, and is strongly influenced by his interests of botany and hill walking. His photographs display a high quality of photographic technical expertise and artistic composure and from an artistic documentary portrait of the culture of the highland and islands of Scotland. Later in his life he was widely published in the Scots Magazine and numerous books on the Scottish landscape.
The captions and titles of the photographs featured in this collection are taken directly from Adam's notes which he wrote on his negative envelopes and in his manuscript indices.
