Sir James Donaldson Collection of European Classical Tour Photographic Albums

Sir James Donaldson (1831-1915), classicist and theologian, served as Principal of the United College of St Andrews University from 1886-1915 and Senior Principal of the University of St Andrews from 1890-1915.  

 

The Donaldson albums contain commercial prints of places visited on European Classical tours. They include works by such noted photographers as Fratelli Alinari, who founded a studio in Florence in 1852; German photographer Georgio Sommer (1843-1914), who worked out of Naples from 1857; Scottish photographer, James Anderson (1813-1877); Italian father and son, Giacomo and Carlo Brogi, active 1863-1896;  Anotonio Nessi, active in Italy in the 19th century; plus some by the Scottish firm of James Valentine & Co.

 

The subjects covered include architecturestatuary, arts and topography, mainly of France and Italy. There are some family photographs included in the albums.
