Photographic collections: George Dobson Valentine Family Collection

George Dobson Valentine Family Collection

George Dobson Valentine (1852-1890) was a son of James Valentine of Dundee and his second wife Rachel Dobson. George began working with his father in their Dundee studios until ill-health caused him to seek a better climate in New Zealand in 1884, where he is still remembered as a fine photographer.

The George Dobson Valentine collection mostly consists of family carte-de-visite and cabinet card albums, loose photographs and views of New Zealand, plus some professional photography, more of which can be found in the James Valentine Collection. The collection also includes a photocopy of an ambrotype featuring seven of the ten children from the two marriages of James Valentine to, firstly, Christina Martin (d.1842) and secondly, Rachel Dobson, and in which young George Dobson is seen leaning on the back of a chair.
