Photographic collections: Carolyn Scott Collection of Rye Hill Social Documentary Photography
Carolyn Scott Collection of Rye Hill Social Documentary Photography
These photographs taken by Scottish photographer Carolyn Scott in the Autumn of 1967 through to the Spring of 1968. The collection represents the photographic body of work she created whilst living in Rye Hill (Newcastle) as result of her having moved from Edinburgh in order to attend the Newcastle College of Art. Moved by the social differences she encountered in contrast to her life in Edinburgh, she was driven to document the people in her adopted community.
These social documentary photographs represent environmental portraits of men, women, children, elderly people and families, members of the community of varying ethnic origin, street scenes, rag and bone men, prostitutes, as well as buildings and ruins. Of particular note are images of poor living conditions and the depressed state of the neighbourhood during the late 1960s.
The mounted prints in the collection formed an exhibition which was displayed in 1968. All prints were created by the photographer in 1968. The contact sheets are of particular interest and feature not only the sequence of images but also many great images in negative format for which prints do not exist.
