Shewan, Alexander (1851-1941)
Alexander Shewan (1851-1941) studied classics at Aberdeen University, and on graduation joined the Indian Civil Service. After a distinguished career, he retired in 1897 to Seagate in St Andrews to concentrate on classical studies, particularly Homer, and published Homeric Essays in 1935.
He became friends with Andrew Lang and was awarded an LLD in 1912 by St Andrews University in recognition of his work.
The collection includes certificates, draft manuscripts, and letters organising a memorial tablet to Andrew Lang in St Salvator’s Chapel.
