Manuscript collections: Lang, Andrew (1844-1912)

Lang, Andrew (1844-1912)

Andrew Lang was best known as a folklorist and compiler of the coloured Fairy Books, but had many other interests and talents, as a historian, essayist, critic and conversationalist. He studied at St Andrews in 1861-1863, and spent a part of every year there in rented accommodation to escape London - a city he hated. He was an inveterate letter-writer and even though he instructed his wife to destroy all his letters and manuscripts on his death, many have survived.

A large collection of letters and manuscripts by Lang have been acquired over the years by gift and purchase, and these are spread throughout the manuscript sequence. These were supplemented by a bequest to the Library from Lang’s biographer, Roger Lancelyn Green (1892-1987). These include manuscript and typescript works, as well as a large body of correspondence between Lang and members of his family and others, listed in  Andrew Lang Manuscripts PDF below.
