Forbes, J.D. (1809-1868)

The papers of James David Forbes (1809-1868), Principal of the United Colleges of St Andrews University from 1859-1868. A large collection, primarily of correspondence, containing several thousand letters on scientific and personal matters, many of the correspondents being the most eminent scientists of Forbes' day. There are also notebooks and diaries of expeditions to the Alps, Switzerland, Italy and Norway. Forbes' interests included meteorology, electricity, mountain climbing and glacier theory, and his papers make an important contribution to the history of science.
