Manuscript collections: Business records
Business records
Special Collections holds significant collections of local business archives. Some were given to us on the liquidation of the business, other businesses are still going and have deposited their historical records for safekeeping.
Many are solicitors' records: a valuable resource for names, house histories, property and financial transactions. They may also contain personal papers of individuals.
There are also papers from businesses connected with engineering, ship-building, furniture making, paper-mills, publishing, pharmacies, architects, auctioneers and others.
Other business records are held within personal papers collections, i.e. Tullis Russell paper mill records are in the David Russell collection, while Davidson & Baxter are within the papers of James Houston Baxter.
Visit the Business Archive Council and Business Archive Council Scotland website for help researching business histories.
